• volcano is an opening in earths crust that erupts when pressure builds up, and is one of the tallest landforms
• the philippines is situated on the boundaries of 2 tectonic pllates - the philippine sea plate and the eurasian plate
• cinder cone volacanoes have circular or oval cones made up of fragments or particles of lava expelled from a single vent
• composite volcanoes have steep sides although they are also shaped like cones
• shield volcanoes look like a shape of a bowl or shield with long, gentle slopes made from basalt lava flows
• lava dome volcanoes are formed by thick lava, which make a steep-sided mound as the lava piles up near the vent of the volcano
• an active volcano is one that has recently erupted or has had at least one eruption for the last 10,000 years

• a dormant or inactive volcano is once an active volcano that has not erupted for 10,000 years but still has potential to erupt again
• the extinct volcano is a volcano that is no longer expected to erupt again
• volcanologists are scientists who study volcanoes and their activities
• the study of volcanoes are known as volcanology
• earth has more than 1,500 active volcanoes
• the heat from the mantle will eventually cause some of the rocks to melt, this forms the hot molten material called magma
• when it rises to the surface of the volcano, a volcanic eruption usually happens. the hot magma is now referred as lava when it goes out of the volcano
• lahar is like a cement, it is liquid when it flows but hardens and solidifies when it stops
