Baseline

A batted ball that fails under any of the following categories: settles on foul territory between the house and the first base, settles on foul territory between the home and the third base, bounds past first or third base on or over foul territory, first falls on foul territory beyond first or third base, while on or over foul territory, touches the person of an umpire or player, or any foreign object to the natural ground
Foul lines
The twolines that extend from the home base through the first and third base, respectively, all the way to the outfield
Foul tip
A batted ball that goes sharply and directly from the bat into the catcher's hands and is legallycaught. It is a strike and the ball is in play.
Frozen rope
A type of hard, solidhit, also known as a line drive
Going
A slang term yelled from the dugout to tell the catcher that a runner is attempting to steal, also known as "stealing"
Grand slam
A home run hit while the runners are on each of the three bases
Ground ball
A batted ball that hits the ground and rolls before reaching a defensive player. The defensive player must tag or force out the batter to record a putout.
Hit
To make contact with the pitched ball, resulting in the batter reaching the base safely without the aid of an error or fielder's choice
Hit-and-run
A strategic play where base runners attempt to steal the next base while the batter swings to try to put the ball in play, with the intent of catching the defensive players out of position
Home plate
The base that is wider and flatter than the other three bases, 17 inches wide and serving as the guideline for the width of the strike zone
Home run
A batted ball that lands in fairterritory and results in the batter touching all four bases and scoring a run safely, typically occurring when the ball is hit over the outfield fence
Home team
The team playing a game on their home field, on defense in the top half of each inning and batting in the bottom half
Hookslide
Type of slide that can be done at second, where the runner acts the slide early and slides to the outside of the baseline, "hooking onto to the far left corner of the bag
Hot corner
The third base position, where the third baseman often plays very close to the batter and must occasionally react to sharply hit balls
Infield
The area of the field contained within the baselines
Infield fly
Called by an umpire when there are runners on first and second base or the bases are loaded and there are less than two outs, and the batter hits a fly ball that stays inside the confines of the infield
Infielder
A player whose defensive position is located on the infield
In flight
Used to describe a ball that has been hit, thrown, or pitched that is in motion and has yet to touch the ground
Inning
Used to break up a game, with the number of innings depending on the level of play
Intentional walk
When a pitcher intentionally throws four balls far outside the strike zone
Interference
Called when a batter or runner obstructs a defender from making a play on the ball or when a defensive player impedes a runner in the baseline
K
The official scorekeeping shorthand symbol for a strikeout, with a backward K designating a strikeout looking
Knuckleball
A pitch in which a pitcher places their fingernails on the seams and uses their knuckles to push the ball out of their hand
Leftfield
The area of the field that constitutes the left side of the outfield
Lead
The practice of base runners standing several feet off the base they are occupying in order to increase their chances of getting to the next base safely
Linedrive
A batted ball that is hit sharply and on a line

Similar to interference, it occurs when a fielder impedes the progress of a base runner while not in possession of the ball or in the act of fielding the ball
