  • COMPUTER HARDWARE SERVICING LESSON 1 THE SYSTEM UNIT
  • Hardware
The physical elements of a computer
  • Software
Commonly known as programs or apps, consists of all the instructions that tell the hardware to perform a task
  • Firmware
A very specific, low-level program for the hardware that allows it to accomplish some specific task
  • The Two (2) Categories of Computer Hardware
    • System Unit
    • Peripheral Devices
  • System Unit
A case that contains electronic components of the computer used to process data
  • Basic Hardware Parts
    • Case
    • Power Supply
    • Fan
    • Motherboard
    • Drives
    • Cards
    • RAM
    • Processor
  • Case
The computer case serves mainly as a way to physically mount and contain all of the actual components inside of a computer, like a motherboard, hard drive, optical drive, floppy disk drive, etc.
  • Power Supply
Connects all of the parts of the computer to electrical power. It is usually found at the back of the computer case.
  • Fan
A fan is any fan inside, or attached to, a computer case used for active cooling, and may refer to fan that draw cooler air into the case from the outside, expel warm air from inside, or move air across a heat sink to cool a particular component.
  • Motherboard
Is a printed circuit board that is the foundation of a computer, located on the back side or at the bottom of the computer chassis. It allocates power and allows communication to the CPU, RAM, and all other computer hardware components.
  • Drives
Are the devices used for long- term storage of information. The main storage area for a computer is its internal hard drive (also called a hard disk).
  • Cards
This allows your computer to connect and communicate with various input and output devices. The term "card" is used because these items are relatively flat in order to fit into the slots provided in the computer case.
  • RAM
This is the short-term memory that is used to store documents while they are being processed. The amount of RAM in a computer is one of the factors that affect the speed of a compute.
  • Processor
A processor or microprocessor is the brain' of a computer system. It is the processor that controls the hardware and software. The processor is sometimes referred to as the Central Processing Unit (CPU).
  • Peripheral Hardware
The name for the computer components that are not found within the computer case.
  • Peripheral Hardware Ports
    • Serial Port
    • Parallel Port
    • VGA
    • PS/2
    • USB
    • TRS
