1.2 Energy Transfer

• The conservation of energy law is that energy cannot be created or destroyed. It can only be transferred from one form to another
• Coal has a large store of chemical energy
• When coal is burned the chemical energy is transferred by heating to the thermal energy store of the coal
• Hot coal and flames transfer energy to the surroundings by the heating and radiation
• A moving car has kinetic energy
• The brakes on a car mechanically do work on the car to slow it down
