Chapter 3 science (chemical composition)

Cards (15)

  • What are elements?
    -Matter in its simplest form
-Cannot be broken down into 2 or more simpler substances by chemical/physical methods
  • What are compounds?

Substances formed by the chemical combination of two or more elements.
  • What are mixtures?

Combination of two or more different substances that are not chemically combined.
It can be made up of
    1. Elements
    2. Compounds
    3. Elements and compounds
  • Properties of compounds:
    1. Components are CHEMICALLY combined
    2. Do NOT have similar properties as its components
    3. It has a fixed composition
    4. It CANNOT be separated by PHYSICAL methods
    5. It has a FIXED BOILING POINT and MELTING POINT
  • Properties of mixtures
    1. Components are NOT chemically combined
    2. It has similar properties as its components
    3. It does NOT have a fixed composition
    4. It can be separated by physical methods
    5. It does NOT have a FIXED BOILING POINT and MELTING POINT
  • What is a solution?
Solution is a homogeneous mixture where one substance (the solute) dissolves completely in another substance (the solvent).
  • What are solutes?
A substance that dissolves in another substance.
  • What are solvents?
    Substances that dissolves other substances.
  • What are suspensions?
They are Heterogeneous mixtures, a mixture of insoluble substances that are suspended in a liquid or gas.
  • What is solubility?
Solubility is the ability of a solute to dissolve in a solvent to form a homogeneous solution.
  • What are some factors or solubility?
    1. The nature of the solvent
    2. The nature of the solute
    3. Temperature
  • What is the rate of solubility?
The amount of solute that dissolves in a fixed amount of solvent, given a fixed amount of time.
  • What are some factors that affects the rate of solubility?
    1. Temperature of solvent
    2. Rate of stirring
    3. Size of solute particles
  • What do they mean when they say a substance is SOLUBLE?
The substance (solute) is able to dissolve completely in a solvent.
  • What do they mean when they say a substance is INSOLUBLE?
Substances that do not dissolve in a given solvent
