    shows the equality of their relationship at the beginning of the play
  • “I do fear thy nature is too full oth milk of human kindness” (1,5)

    she fears Macbeth is to innocent and pure , milk is white and pure
  • ”Unsex me here… take my milk for gall” (1,5)

    asking the witches to replace her milk with poison - she wants to have no gender so she can commit the act herself - goes against societys view at the time of woman being too fragile to commit such acts - she goes against this
  • “Look like th’innocent flower but be the serpent under it” (1,5) 

    the snake links to the devil - adam and eve - she is telling Macbeth to be deceptive
  • “When you durst do it then you were a man” (1,7)

    she’s undermining her husbands manliness - manipulating him
  • “I would … have dashed the brains out” (1,7)

    Violent Imagery- shows her lack of maternal instinct and commitment to power
  • “My hands are of your colour , but I shame to wear a heart of white” (2,2)

    her hands are covered in blood , which keeps the focus on the theme of guilt - white is seen as pure
  • “What done is done” (3,2) 

    Lady Macbeth criticises Macbeth for feeling regret - contrast to her at the end of the play
  • “Are you a man? (3,4)

    She uses previous tactics to question his masculinity, here they do not have the same effect
  • “Out damned spot.. out i say” (5,1) 

    Lady Macbeth is obsessed with cleaning the blood off her hands
  • “All the perfumes of Arabia will not sweeten this little hand” (5,1) 

    She knows she cannot change what has happened , she is now regretful
