    Teachers were told to identify bright students who could be potential Nazi leaders, they were sent to academies called ‘Napolas’ (National Political Educational Institutions)

    Sometimes called the league of German maidens, there were two sections one for 14yrs and under called the young girls league, then the Faith and beauty group for 17-21yrs
  • How were youth groups prioritised?
    School days ran for only half the day so kids could go to the groups
    Participation was forced in 1936
    They had meetings multiple times in a week so it could be priority for kids
  • Why was being away from parents good?
    The risk of parents influencing kids on their own political ideas rather than the Nazis ideal
  • Why were parents ok with the idea?
    It was like a free childcare service

  • What did the youth think of these groups?

    Most liked the groups as they were a fun activity and some get-aways, but there was some opposition

    Youngsters who refused to join the youth groups and skipped them
  • Who skipped the youth groups?
    The ‘Swingyouth’, a group who had a love for jazz music which Nazis banned
    Others formed gangs, such as the ‘Roving dudes‘ or ‘Edelweiss pirates’
    The ‘Navajos’ went camping and sang songs which made fun of Hitler and the Nazis
