  • How does Education enforce Gender Roles
    • Imitation of role models - may socialise students into their gender identity through how female/male teachers/older students are expected to behave 
    • Best - many books portrayed stereotypical gender roles
  • What is the National Curriculum (formal)
    Sets out compulsory subjects to be taught in schools
    Gillborn & Coard - believed the national curriculum was ethnocentric (enforce dominance of british values)
  • What is the Hidden Curriculum (informal)
    Sets values and principles to students involuntarily e.g. importance of dress code, school hierarchy, respect authority etc
    • If a pupil breaks formal or informal social controls they receive negative sanctions or reward conformity 
    • Francis, boys were punished more harshly and teachers were more sympathetic towards girls
