CW quiz 1

Cards (7)

  • Proscenium Stage

"picture frame" placed around the front of the playing area of an end stage, allows all the actors to be seen on stage without the people in the audience having to look behind others and without needing to move around to see everything that is going on stage, also means that the actors only have to focus on one area rather than having to move around a lot
  • Arena stage

Audience is around the stage surrounding all 4 sides (one central stage with 4 sets of audience seating around all sides), the stage area is often raised to improve sightlines
  • In-the-round stage

The actual stage set up is in the centre of the audience who is located around the stage, can sometimes be done with higher floors, creates a more intimate feeling between the actors, the story and the audience
  • Traverse stage

Stage with only two sides of seats, style of staging that is almost like a catwalk, commonly used in plays with not a big cast, also found used in fashion shows
  • Thrust stage
Audience is around 3 sides, actors have the chance to go backstage and change if need be and have the chance to leave when necessary, the shape of the setup is usually square or rectangular which is then raised and surrounded by the seating for the audience
  • End stage

A lot like the thrust stage but the audience is located at the front of the stage rather than surrounds it, the backstage area is behind the background wall as there is usually no wing space to the sides, however, it is common that there will be a lot of different entrance points even though the are no wings
  • Profile theatres
Audience is located on either side of the stage opposite each other with the stage in the middle, the actors will be placed in profile to the audience so that they are able to be seen from both sides rather than one side have to look at the actors back, these stages can be known to be long and narrow, most like the area stage other than it has only two sides for the audience rather than four
