  • Types of Enema Solutions

  • Sodium Phosphate Enema
    A mix of water and salt (saline) that pulls water from the colon into the stool, making it easier to pass
  • Risks of Using an Enema
    • Using too much liquid (body may hold some liquid in and release it without warning)
    • Stretching the bowel (increases chance of perforation)
    • Using liquid that is too hot or cold (can cause discomfort or pain)
  • Use the recommended amount of room temperature liquid, and do not use an enema too frequently
  • Enema Instructions
    1. Choose a quiet place with space to lie down
    2. Remove lower body clothing
    3. Wash hands
    4. Lie on left side if right-handed or right side if left-handed
    5. Bend top knee and place rolled towel underneath
    6. Remove cap from nozzle
    7. Gently insert nozzle 10 cm into rectum
    8. Slowly squeeze liquid from container until empty
    9. Gently remove nozzle
    10. Wait for enema to take effect (2 mins to 1 hour)
    11. Go to toilet to empty bowels
  • Fleet Enema
    Contains monobasic sodium phosphate monohydrate and dibasic sodium phosphate heptahydrate, with 4.4 g of sodium per delivered dose
  • An enema is an invasive procedure and should only be used for medical reasons, not as a regular treatment for constipation
  • Frequent constipation can indicate a medical condition, so a doctor should be consulted
  • People with compromised immune systems, rectal prolapse, hemorrhoids, or history of bowel obstruction or colon surgery should avoid using enemas
  • The use of an enema before giving birth is no longer the standard recommendation
