  • Significant figures
    1. All non-zeros are significant
    2. all zeros between non-zero digits are significant: 107-3 sig figs
    3. 4000 - 1 sig figs while 4000. - 4 sig figs
    4. Decimal points preceded by a non-zero digit: 1.000-4 sig figs 0.0010-2 sig figs 1.0010-5 sig figs
  • Significant Figures:
    When adding or subtracting, the decimal point has to be rounded off the the number with the least decimal places: 3.24+4.234=7.474→7.47 4.3-2.65=1.65→1.7
  • Significant figures:
    When multiplying and dividing, the number has to be rounded off to the number with the least number of significant figures 4.02/2.1=1.914→1.9
    60.5 x 0.0010=0.0605→0.06
