Cards (17)

  • Presumption is the distortion or vice
    directly opposed to the theological
virtue of hope. It is an unwarranted or
    habitual expectation that eternal life
will be gained without God's assistance,
or that salvation will be granted
regardless of one's personal response to
    God's grace.
  • 1st commandment forbids these 5 sins:
    • Polytheism and Idolatry
    • Superstition
    • Irreligion
    • Sacrilege
    • Simony
  • -Sloth (lack of physical or spiritual effort)
    • Spiritual indolence (habitual love of ease and comfort, and a disposition that avoids physical movement or mental or volitional activity)
  • Polytheism and idolatry, which divinizes
    creatures, power, money, or even
    demons
  • Superstition which is a departure from
the worship due to the true God and
which also expresses itself in various
forms of divination, magic, sorcery, and
    spiritism
  • Irreligion which is evidenced: in
    tempting God by word or deed;
  • in sacrilege, which profanes sacred
persons or sacred things, above all
    the Eucharist;
  • In simony, which involves the buying
    and selling of spiritual things.
  • Does the commandment of God, “You shall not make for yourself a graven image”, forbid the cult of images?
In the Old Testament this commandment forbade
any representation of God who is absolutely transcendent.
  • Name holds special importance and power; stood for a person; knowing the name of someone gave power over that person.
  • God's name in Hebrew (YHWH)
  • Through this name God expressed His eternal self-sufficient uniqueness, His lordship over history’s temporal
sequence of past, present, and future, in a saving, liberating presence.
  • Philippians 2:9-11
...so that in JESUS’ name, every knee must
bend...and every tongue proclaim: JESUS CHRIST
    IS LORD!”
  • “name in vain" -meant more than coarse language
  • 4 ways to use name in vain
    Using God’s name in sorcery,
    Invoking curses on others
    Conjuring up evil spirits
Claiming the power inherent in God’s
personal name to do harm to others
  • As Christians, we are baptized in the name of
the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy
    Spirit
