Clauses and phrases make up a
sentence
In the previous quarter, we learned that a
phrase
is a
group of words
without
a
subject
and a
verb
Clauses
add more information in the sentence too;
however
, unlike phrases, clauses consist of a
subject
and a
verb
There are
two
basic kinds of clauses:
independent
and
dependent
Independent clauses
The type of clause that can stand
alone.
Meaning they are a complete sentence by itself, hence it is sometimes referred as the
main
clause
Independent Clause
Dr. Renato U. Solidum, Jr. is the head of Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PhiVolcs)
PhiVolcs monitor volcanic, earthquake, and tsunami activity
Dependent clause
A group of words that contains a
subject
and a
predicate
but cannot stand alone as a complete sentence
Compound sentence
A sentence that contains two or more
independent
clauses that are joined by a
coordinating conjunction
Compound-complex sentence
A sentence that contains
two
or more
independent
clauses and at least one dependent clause
Complex sentence
A sentence that contains one
independent
clause and at least one
dependent
clause
