  • Clauses and phrases make up a sentence
  • In the previous quarter, we learned that a phrase is a group of words without a subject and a verb
  • Clauses add more information in the sentence too; however, unlike phrases, clauses consist of a subject and a verb
  • There are two basic kinds of clauses: independent and dependent
  • Independent clauses
    The type of clause that can stand alone. Meaning they are a complete sentence by itself, hence it is sometimes referred as the main clause
  • Independent Clause
    • Dr. Renato U. Solidum, Jr. is the head of Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PhiVolcs)
    • PhiVolcs monitor volcanic, earthquake, and tsunami activity
  • Dependent clause
    A group of words that contains a subject and a predicate but cannot stand alone as a complete sentence
  • Compound sentence
    A sentence that contains two or more independent clauses that are joined by a coordinating conjunction
  • Compound-complex sentence
    A sentence that contains two or more independent clauses and at least one dependent clause
  • Complex sentence
    A sentence that contains one independent clause and at least one dependent clause
