  • The main rule of paragraph writing is to focus on one idea or topic.
  • A topic sentence is called the “controlling idea” of a paragraph. Expresses the main idea of the paragraph.
  • Topic outline - a type of outline which presents the major topics, subtopics, and supporting details in the form of words and phrases.
  • Sentence outline - a type of outline that, presents the thesis statement, major topics, subtopics, and supporting details in sentence form.
  • Outline - a tool used in improving and organizing written ideas about a topic into a logical order.
  • Paragraph - refers to a group of sentences organized to discuss a topic.
  • Thesis statement - a one-sentence statement that expresses the main idea of an essay
  • Concluding sentences - restates what the topic of the paragraph is all about. Never adds new information.
  • Supporting sentences have only 5 maximum of number. But the most common is 3.
  • Supporting sentences - serve as the body of your paragraph. Give details about the topic, provide information by citing an example, evidence, relevant fact, reason, incident, and specific information.
  • Primary sources - first-hand accounts of a topic/ main source
  • Supporting details - provides additional information to clarify the main idea
  • Subtopic - refers ti the minor phrases/sentences which are formed from the major topics
  • Major topic - it is a sentence/phrase formed from the thesis statement
  • Controlling idea - first sentence in a paragraph
  • Clear topic sentence - provides general summary of the paragraph
  • Secondary sources - often quote or otherwise use primary. Can cover the same topic, but add a layer of interpretation and analysis.
  • Adequate development - it describes, explains, and supports the topic sentence.
  • Coherence - have a clear and logical relation to each other. Refers to the connection of ideas in the paragraph in general.
  • Unity - all of the sentences in the paragraph are related to the topic sentence, focuses solely on a single idea, point, or argument.
  • Clear topic sentence - provides general summary of the paragraph
