  • Artificial heart
    • mechanical devices pump blood when heart failed. Only temporary until donor to help recover by heart resting and healing can be permanent fix
    • advantages- less likely to be rejected by immune system
    • disadvantages- surgery lead to bleeding and infection and artificial don’t work as well as natural. electric motor could run out. Blood clots and strokes. Have to take drugs to thin blood which causes bleeding problems
  • Faulty heart valves
    • Valves can be weakened
    • damage could cause valve tissue to stiffen or become leaky and blood flow in both directions
    • can replace valves or get mechanical
    • not as major surgery as heart transplant but still blood clot problems
  • Artificial blood
    • when lots of blood lost Calum’s of blood can be topped up
    • it’s a salt solution. it’s safe if no air bubbles get into blood. gives time for body to produce new red blood cells
