    • Considered as a serious mental illness, unusual mood changes and extremes of emotions, mood swings so intense that even sleeping patterns and ability to think clearly may be affected, without proper diagnosis, person suffering bipolar disorder may end up hurting themselves when their manic-depressive episodes become too much to bear
  • Generalized Anxiety Disorder
    • Refers to excessive anxiety and worrying with difficulty to control oneself, restlessness, being easily tired, difficulty in concentrating, irritability, muscular tension, difficulty staying asleep
  • Social Anxiety Disorder

    • Refers to a persistent fear of socializing with unfamiliar situations or people, fear to act in ways that may be embarrassing and humiliating, may lead to anxiety when exposed and can cause panic attacks, situation feared may be avoided but when in situation anxiety is deeply felt and endured causing distress
  • Panic Disorder
    • Points to a sudden surge of fear or intense discomfort reaching its peak within minutes, fast heartbeats, chest pain, sweating, trembling, shortness of breath, choking sensation, nausea, dizziness, lightheadedness, numbness, chills or heat, feeling of being detached to self, fear of losing control, fear of dying
  • Schizophrenia
    • Gross deficits in reality testing, gross incapacity to properly detect what is real and not real, delusion, hallucination, disorganized speech, catatonic behavior, flat emotion, amotivation, failure to maintain physical hygiene, may need therapeutic intervention of a psychiatrist
  • Depression
    • Feeling of sadness that lingers for weeks or longer accompanied by a feeling of worthlessness and hopelessness, depression is a serious problem, things that a person do may seem to be completely meaningless to them, may lead to self harm
  • Eating Disorder
    • Includes bulimia nervosa, anorexia nervosa, binge-eating disorder, lifestyle related disorder and may lead to fatal illness
  • Personality Disorder
    • An adolescent with this mental disorder may display behavior that markedly deviates from the expectations of the culture of the individual that exhibits it, person may perceive these behaviors as right and proper despite its negative effect on their day to day life and interactions, distorted thinking patterns, problematic emotional response, over and underregulated impulse control, interpersonal difficulties

    • Refers to a repetitive and persistent pattern of behavior in which the basic rights of others or major age-appropriate societal norms or rules are violated

    Refers to the excessive use of the internet which impairs daily life which led to common internet addiction described as compulsive-impulsive disorder plus sexual preoccupations

    • Basic unit of our society
    • How you are being raised helps shape the person that you are
    • The lack of parental presence, guidance, and warmth leads to feelings of emptiness and insecurity among adolescents who, in turn seek acceptance form other people
  • Peers
    • People in the same age group
    • Peers cam contribute to your well-being but can also influence you negatively
  • Community and neighborhood
    • A person or adolescent can imbibe the behaviors, attitudes, and mindsets of the people around you
  • School-related factors
    • Can contribute or threaten your health and well being
    • Good factors: joining academic and non-academic curricular activities
    • Threats: being bullied in school and influenced to cut classes
  • Socio-economic status

    • Some may enjoy luxury and comfort of their adolescent life but some may be experiencing poverty
  • Vulnerability
    • Biological vulnerability: includes being affected by some physical illness including psychiatric disorders such as depression or bipolar disorder
    • Early experience: includes intense emotional experiences

    1. Being self-aware is the key to good mental health
    2. Start with the self rather than immediately changing your situation or other people's behavior
    3. Check how you see yourself and the extent of effect of certain experiences to you
    4. Determine strengths and areas to improve on

    6. Experiencing fear is normal
