Catholic emancipation

• County Clare elections July 1828
• election because of the threat of a civil war but the vast majority of irish would’ve sided with the catholic association and refuse to obey the British gov officials in Ireland
• the Duke of wellington was appointed as an Irish MP so Daniel O’Connell stood against him but Catholics could not become MPs
• passed the catholic emancipation act in 1829
• 173 Tories voted against it
• Ultra Tories thought it was an assult on the British constitution
