  • the Duke of wellington was appointed as an Irish MP so Daniel O’Connell stood against him but Catholics could not become MPs
  • passed the catholic emancipation act in 1829
  • 173 Tories voted against it
  • Ultra Tories thought it was an assult on the British constitution
