• primary effects:

  • power lines were interrupted
  • airports were badly damaged
  • roads were blocked by debris and trees
  • 5 metre storm surge
  • rice and seed stocks were lost in storm surges
• secondary effects:

  • oil barge spilt causing 800,000 litre leak - contaminated mangroves, fishing had to be stopped because of contaminated waters
  • flooding caused ground water to be contaminated with sea water, chemicals and sewage - increased the likelihood of disease and infections
• short term responses:

  • 800,000 evacuated
  • emergency aid supplies arrived 3 days later when airports opened
  • president televised a warning
  • within two weeks over 1 million food packs and 250,000 litres of water where distributed
