  • Kingdom Animalia
The animal kingdom can be divided into 9 smaller groups called phyla
  • Phylum Porifera (Sponges)

    • Sessile animals (they spend their lives attached to rocks)
    • Water enters small pores, travels through canals, and exits through a large hole at the top
  • Phylum Cnidaria (Jellyfish, sea anemones, corals)

    • Have tentacles with stinging cells
    • Can have two body shapes: umbrella-shaped medusa or vase-shaped polyp
    • Coral reefs contain many members
  • Phylum Platyhelminthes (Flatworms)

    • Very thin and flat
    • Have bilateral symmetry
    • First animals to have a head, with hooks and suckers
  • Phylum Nematoda (Roundworms)

    • Not segmented, body surfaces appear smooth
    • Many are parasites
    • Have a complete digestive tract with mouth and opening for waste
  • Phylum Mollusca (Clams, snails, squid, octopus)

    • Most have a hard shell covering soft bodies
    • Clams have a muscular foot for locomotion
    • Breathe by means of gills
    • Not all have shells
  • Phylum Annelida (Earthworms, sandworms, leeches)

    • Bodies are segmented
    • Have a circulatory system with multiple hearts
    • Have a body cavity called a coelom
  • Phylum Arthropoda (Crayfish, lobsters, crabs, insects, spiders)

    • Have jointed legs
    • Have a crunchy exoskeleton
    • Have well-developed sense organs
  • Phylum Echinodermata (Starfish, sand dollars, sea urchins)

    • Have spiny (prickly) skin
    • Have radial symmetry as adults
    • Have tube feet for locomotion
  • Phylum Chordata (Fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds, mammals)

    • Have a backbone (are vertebrates)
    • Can be subdivided into 7 classes
  • Classes of Phylum Chordata
    • Agnatha (jawless fish)
    • Chondrichthyes (cartilage-skeleton fish)
    • Osteichthyes (bone-skeleton fish)
    • Amphibia
    • Reptilia
    • Aves
    • Mammalia
