Cards (3)

  • compliance
most superficial (weak and temporary) - agrees with group publicly but private beliefs remain in disagreement - individual changes behaviour and opinions to be accepted by the group and avoid disapproval - usually a short term change in behaviour as personal views havent changed
  • identification
moderate type of conformity (generally temporary) - occurs when person conforms to views and behaviours of group because they identify with the group and want to be a part of it - elements of compliance and internalisation as individual might mostly privately accept views and behaviours but purpose of conforming is to be publicly accepted as a group member
  • internalisation
deepest level of conformity - occurs when we genuinely accept group norms and adopt viewpoint publicly and privately - conversion as person converts way of thinking even when group is absent - often causes long lasting change
