visual disorders

Cards (4)

    • Visual disorders can be inherited or are acquired with age. Refractive errors (myopia and hyperopia) are the most common type of visual disorder because the eye does not focus light properly on the retina
    • Myopia: A person can focus on close objects clearly, but distant objects appear blurred because the focal point falls in front of the retina. Causes: elongated eyeball, incorrect lens shape→ ciliary muscles can't flatten lens, cornea is too curved
    • Hyperopia: A person can focus on distant objects clearly, but close objects appear blurred because the focal point falls behind the retina.  Cause: eyeball is too rounded, incorrect lens shape→ ciliary muscles cant contract to round lens, cornea is too flat
    • Cataracts: clouding of lens. Formation is gradual process occurring from age or disease and can cause potential blindness
