  • Unintentional injuries are those that occur without the intention to harm. These injuries are unplanned. Examples of these are household fires, drowning, vehicular accidents, and poisoning.
  • Intentional injuries refer to injuries resulting from purposeful human action, whether directed at oneself or others. Intentional injuries include self-inflicted and interpersonal acts of violence intended to cause harm. Because these injuries are intentional, by their very nature they are often preventable. By implementing policies, laws, and safeguards at schools, homes, and the community, studies have shown that these kinds of injuries and deaths can be mitigated.
  • Bullying- is an undesired aggressive behavior involving a real perceived superiority to others. This behavior is repeated
  • Verbal bullying- name calling, teasing, making disrespectful comments about someone's attributes (appearance, religion, ethnicity, disability, sexual orientation, etc.)
  • Social bullying- also called relational bullying, or bullying with exclusionary tactics, involves deliberately preventing someone from joining or being part of a group, whether it's at a lunch table, game, sport, or social activity. It also involves hurting someone’s reputation or relationships spreading rumors and public embarrassment.
  • Physical bullying- or bullying with aggressive physical intimidation, involves repeated hitting, kicking, tripping, blocking, pushing, and touching in unwanted and inappropriate ways.
  • Cyber bullying- or bullying in cyberspace, involves haranguing someone by spreading mean words, lies, and false rumors through emails, text messages, and social media posts. Sexist, racist, and homophobic messages create a hostile atmosphere, even when not directly targeting a person.
  • Stalking- is when a person repeatedly watched, followed, or harassed, making him/her afraid and/or unsafe. Someone you know casually, a stranger, past or current friend, boyfriend, or girlfriend, can be stalkers. Stalking behaviors can be part of an abusive relationship.
  • Extortion- act of obtaining money, property or favors from other people. This can happen inside and outside of schools wherein victim students give money for the assurance that they will not be physically hurt. Resistance from the victim may result to injury that is intentionally done.
  • Gang and Youth Violence- A gang is a group of people, mostly adolescents, who bond together. They do illegal activities together and fight against other gangs.
  • Illegal Fraternity-related Violence- A fraternity is a group of people with common purpose or interest. Fraternities are mostly based in colleges and universities. Most youth join fraternities for the sense of belongingness. But some fraternities implement initiation rites to potential recruits wherein they undergo physical and mental test. Sometimes, initiation rites include hazing, an act considered illegal in our country which causes injuries that may lead to death. Some fraternities also get involved in rumbles, riots, or fights with other fraternities, exposing them to more danger.
  • Kidnapping and Abduction- A crime by taking away or forcefully transporting a person, unlawfully or without consent. It is usually done with the intent to get benefits from the person or family like ransom, shield or hostage.
  • Acts of Terror- a criminal act which aims to instill a state of fear in the general public, group or particular person. Terrorist groups create terrorism using violence, fear and intimidation, drawing attention of the local populace, government, and the world to their cause. In the process, people’s lives are at stake. Their actions usually result in injuries and deaths.
  • Domestic Violence- is a pattern of behavior used by one person to control the other. This can happen repeatedly once in a while. It includes physical violence, isolation from relatives or friends, emotional abuse, and financial abuse. Victims of domestic violence often suffer not only physical injuries. They also suffer psychologically and emotionally as well.
  • Suicide- the act of intentionally killing oneself, mostly because of extreme depression or intense pain. This act is usually planned. No suicide can be considered unintentional. It is a serious public health problem that can have lasting harmful effects on individuals, families, and communities.
  • Incest- is a sexual relation between close relatives.
  • Verbal Abuse- intentional use of improper or excessive words to attack, control, and inflict harm to a person creating emotional pain and mental anguish.
  • Sexual Abuse- an unwanted non-consensual sexual activity where abuser intentionally uses force, threats, and takes advantage of the victim. Derogatory namecalling, refusal to use contraception, deliberate painful sex, deliberate infecting of sexual diseases and use of objects without consent to cause pain or humiliation are considered actions of sexual abuse.
  • Rape- is a sexual assault by sexual penetration without consent or when the victim is not capable of giving consent. The rapist uses force to threat or harm. Penetration may be by part of the body or an object.
  • Molestation- is a sexual abuse of an adult to a person, either child or adult, for sexual pleasure or profit.
