• The Purpose of a filtration system is to clean the water of any solid particles.
• Filters Remove:

  • Excess Food
  • Parts of Plants
  • Harmful Chemicals
• Ammonia builds up if you leave food in the water for too long.
• There are 3 different types if filtration systems:

  Biological

  Mechanical

  Chemical
• A biological filter uses bacteria that eats ammonia, turning it into nitrate which can be removed by plants or other methods.
• The Nitrogen Cycle

• Resin absorbs Phosphate
• Mechanical Filters remove free-floating objects from the water before the turn into harmful chemicals
• Air pumps increase surface area by increasing the number of gas bubbles in the water.
• Gas exchange occurs on the surface of the water when carbon dioxide leaves and oxygen enters the water.
• Air pumps push oxygenated water to the bottom of the tank
