  • Things to consider when choosing a house :
    • Location : Rural or urban + are there nearby amenities.
    • Size -The number and size of rooms need to suit the number of people in the family.

    Usually, a good design is:
    • Attractive

    • Durable
    • Safe
    • Environmentally friendly

  • Colour is a feature of design that can affect the emotion of people and the atmosphere.
    • Warm colours : create a cosy effect (shades of red,orange and pink).
    • Cool - creates cool and relaxing atmosphere (blue and green).
    • Neutral - shades of white,cream and brown. This is used as backgrounds.
    • Pastel : pale colours : soft shades of blue,green yellow and pink this can be used in bedrooms and nurseries.
  • Texture is a second feature of design
    • A balance of texture adds comfort and style to any room.
    • ‘Warm/rough surfaces - cosy
  • Line is a feature of design that is used to create a visual effect.
    diagonal - dramatic.
    horizontal - makes it look wider.
    curved - creates a gentle and relaxing feeling.

    • if you use too much you can make the room overcrowded but if you use little to know the patterns can be boring

    • it is when all part of the design work well together eg patterns,colours and textures work in harmony.

  • Emphasis is a design principle of drawing attention to particular features of a room, this can be due to colour,texture and lightening.
  • Proportion is a design principle when pieces of furniture in a room relate to each other in size.
    • You can’t have huge pieces of furniture in a small room will be out of proportion

    • The repeated use of colour pattern or texture in a room. Gives harmony to the room.

    • I would consider the aspect of the room if it’s North facing and I would utilise warm colours like pink as north facing rooms have less lighting.
    • I would consider proportion when choosing my furniture to decorate the room as I don’t want big pieces of furniture in a small room.
    • I will consider the traffic flow and I will space out my furniture (efficiency - max effort)
    • make sure the room is functional for example a study bedroom needs to have additional space for a table
  • Ensure that the flooring is soft for a child and you have a window guards in a bedroom.
    • The first factor to consider when choosing a family home is the size would it accommodate the amount of people in the family ?
    • The second factor to consider is the location, is it near amenities and education.
    • Cost: do the family have enough money to rent/buy a house that is applicable to their needs.

    • balance to all parts of the design of your living room work together
    • The lighting and aspect needs to be considered for example if it‘s south facing any colour could be used like beige, as the amount of natural light is high in the south facing house

    • A kitchen sink is often placed under window because of the natural light ; so they can see the particles of food on the plate whilst washing up.
