9- EUTHYROID SICK SYNDROME

• Nonthyroidal systemic illness


  Condition in which clinically euthyroid patients have low serum levels of thyroid hormones
• Nonthyroidal systemic illness

  • T3 is low
  • Reverse T3 (rT3) is high
• Mechanism of abnormality

  T4 is converted to rT3, which is inactive, instead of T3, which is active
• Nonthyroidal systemic illness

  • TSH is NOT high
  • Not real hypothyroidism
• Treatment

  Towards underlying illness, thyroid hormone replacement is NOT indicated
