  • Monetary Loss: If a food businesses' health and safety is poor, fewer customers will buy its products, and spoiled products will need to be replaced. These costs and drops in sales can cause big problems, especially for smaller establishments. Customers may also lodge complaints or request refunds or compensation. Businesses may offer deals or discounts on a customer's next purchase to keep their loyalty, adding further costs. Legal Consequences: The severity of the incident will determine the legal consequences, which may include fines, lawsuits, jail time and forced closure.
  • Negative Press: Customers trust businesses to serve them safe food products. If that trust is broken, opinion of the food business who broke it will drop. Negative reviews, legal action and word of mouth can cause serious damage to a food business' reputation and, therefore, its profits, as people will be less willing to shop or eat there.
