• Encourages the patient to talk through their thoughts with the aim to reveal repressed thoughts and trauma
• Free association -

  encouraged to lie comfortably and speak aloud so repressed memories may slip out without thinking
• Dream analysis -

  gives us clues to the contents on the unconscious mind including repressed memories
• Freudian slips -

  slips of the tongue - uses one worked but means another. Wrong words uncover the unconscious thoughts
