Word Roots and Combining Forms
Roots are the main part of a word, referring to body components. Combining forms add a vowel, usually an -o, to facilitate pronunciation when combined with another root or suffix not beginning with a vowel.
A combining vowel is not used when the suffix already begins with a vowel
Diacritical marks indicate long (macron) or short (breve) sounds
