Receptors

• Receptors detect stimuli and send signals to the CNS due to stimulation creating a generator potential
• Pacinian Corpuscles are pressure receptors found in skin, applied pressure causes deformation of plasma membrane
• Deformation of Pacinian Corpuscle membrane causes stretch mediated sodium channels to open and depolarize the membrane, establishing generator potential
• Rods process images in black and white, rhodopsin is broken down by light energy to create generator potential
• Rods detect light at low intensities due to retinal convergence (summation), but have low visual accuity as it cant distinguish sources
• Cones process images in colour, using iodopsin (RGB) to absorb different wavelengths, creating generator potential
• Cones detect light at high intensities due to only being connected to a bipolar cell, but have high visual accuity being able to detect sources
• Distribution of Rods and Cones in the retina are uneven, most cones are located in the fovea due to lens focusing light there
