Themes: Life/ Love/ Gothic
Ideas: Description of Thornfield, presented as a medieval, isolated estate. Conforms to gothic tropes. Suggests that Thornfield (and Jane) is a dark and boring place without Rochester. Cheerless is similar to the description of Bertha's laugh- her life (like Jane) is one of coldeness without Rochester- with him its one of high emotion, she is immediately present at Thornfield.

Ideas: Introduction of Bertha through a simple sound which subverts their usual connotations, suggesting that she is instantly dehumanised. Some animals such as hyenas (which she is later compared to), meaning she is further dehumanised. Mirthless echoes the effect of Mr Rochesters abuse
