Gas pressure

Cards (4)

  • Why does a water tank explode when heated?

Normally gases move randomly at high speeds. the particles collide with the walls of the container which exerts a force, creating pressure. When heated the particles gain more kinetic energy, so move faster and collide with the side of the container more often and with more force. This increases the gas pressure. The pressure eventually increases so much that the container explodes
  • what happens to an imploding can when it is being heated?
Once the can is being heated with the water inside, the water will start to boil and the gas particles will move randomly at high speeds which will collide with the walls of the container, this exerts a force, creating pressure. The particles will begin to gain more kinetic energy. So move faster and collide with the container more often and with more force. This increases the gas pressure.
  • What happens to an imploding can when it is being cooled?
Once the gas in the can is being cooled, the water vapour gas condenses into liquid water which decreases the pressure as there are less collisions with the walls of the container. There is more pressure outside the can than inside which causes the can to implode
  • What happened if we cool a balloon?
when the balloon is being cooled down, the gas particles will collide with the walls of the balloon inside with force, creating less pressure. the gas will have less kinetic energy which decreases. Soon the gas will make the balloon shrink over time.
