• nutrients taken in by active transport from roots and then transported into xylem -> lack of nutrients = mineral deficency -> cannot grow as well + yield is reduced
• farmers can add NPK fertilisers to soil to increase yield of their crops
• lack of nitrate = poor leaf growth
• lack of phosphate = poor root growth
• lack of potassium = yellowing of leaves
