clip the slide carefully onto the stage
ensure the lowest-powered objective lens is over the stage
use the coarse adjustment knob to bring the stage up
look down the eyepiece, gradually move the stage downwards using the knob and stop when the image is in focus
adjust the knob until a clear image is obtained
change the objective lens into a higher-power and readjust the stage using the coarse
