Respiratory Anatomy

Cards (6)

  • Thorax
    The chest cavity
  • Respiratory System
    Overview of the respiratory system
  • Upper Respiratory Tract
Overview of the upper respiratory tract
  • Mediastinum
The central compartment of the thoracic cavity, containing the heart and associated structures
  • Nasal Cavity
    • There are 2 nasal cavities divided by a midline nasal septum
    • Within each cavity, on the lateral wall, there are three curved shelves of bone (turbinates/conchae)
    • These conchae help form four meatuses - spaces for air to flow through
    • Inferior nasal meatus - between inferior concha and nasal floor
    • Middle nasal meatus - between middle and inferior concha
    • Superior nasal meatus - between superior and middle concha
    • Sphenoethmoidal recess - between the nasal roof and superior concha
    • At the anterior aspect of the nasal cavity is the nasal vestibule - this protrudes as the nose
    • The largest part of the nasal cavity is the respiratory region which is rich in neurovascular tissue and lined with respiratory epithelium which helps alter air to be more suitable
    • At the superior aspect of the nasal cavity is the olfactory region which is where the olfactory nerves and epithelium are present - these create our sense of smell
  • Chest Wall
The structures that enclose and protect the thoracic cavity
