COASTS

Cards (10)

  • Why is sediment deposited in coastal area?

When the water slows down and doesn’t have enough energy to carry sediment. So drops it.
  • Longshore drift
The movement of material along the shore by wave action.
    Suspension
small particles such as slits and clay are suspended in the flow of the water.
  • Attrition
When rock and stones are carried by waves hit and knock against each other wearing them down.
  • Abrasion
When rocks and other materials carried by the sea are picked up by strong waves and thrown against coastline causing more to be broken off and carried away
  • Hydraulic power
Sheer force of the water crashing against the coastline causing materials to be dislodged and carried away by the sea.
  • Mass movement sliding
A slide occurs when a proportion of the rock suddenly gives way and moves downhill, usually aided by heavy rainfall.
  • mass movement rockfall
Bits of rockfall of the cliff face usually due to freeze-thaw weathering
  • Mass movement slumping
Downward movement of materials when waves erode the base of the cliff creating a wave-cut notch causing the top of the cliff to slip and cause it to slump.
  • Chemical weathering
    Acid rain
  • Mechanical weathering
Process that causes rock to crumble
