geography weather

Cards (25)

  • global atmospheric circulation : the movement of air around the earth to try and balance the temperature and drives the worlds weather
  • global atmospheric circuration involves interconnected cells of air : polar, ferrell , hadley
  • hadley cell : hot dry air rises near equator and moves away from it
  • ferrel cell : warm moist air rises near equator and moves away from it
  • polar cell : cold dense air sinks at poles and moves towards equator
  • these winds curve due to earths rotation and change seasonally as the tilt of the earth changes
  • tropical storms : huge storms like cyclones, hurricanes and typhoons and they form in the tropics near the equator
    1. how they are formed : high humidity and hot water over 26 degrees . 2 . water evaporates from ocean surface and comes into contacts with cold air forming clouds 3. a colum of low pressure develops at the centre - winds form around 4. as the pressure in the eye weakens spread of wind increases
  • where they occur : tropical regions , where there is no land mass to slow them down so they can grow into massive storms
  • effect on people : destruction of homes and buildings , loss of life , damage to crops and infrastructure
  • effect on environment : deforestation , soil erosion , pollution , habitat destruction
  • must have windspeeds over 74mph and they gather strenghth over the ocean but weaken over land because their energy source is cut off ( evaporated water)
  • they form 5-15 north and south of the equator in summer and autumn when ocean temps are highest
  • typhoon hayian november 2013 philipines - one of strongest storms every recorded.
  • primary effects : 6300 killed in storm surge most drowned , 600,000 displaced , 40,000 homes destroyed, strong winds damqged buildings power lines and crops , flooding
  • secondary effects : 14 million effected , 6 million jobs lost , flooding caused landslides - blocking roads and restricting access for aid workers , shortages of necessities, infastructure destroyed , looting and violence broke out
  • immideate responses : rapid overseas aid , is helicopters for search and rescue and aid , field hospitals for injured and 1200 evacuation centres set up
  • long term responses - international financial aid, supplies and medical support, rebuilding , farming quickly restablidhed and more homes and cyclone shelters
  • UK weather is moderate but has experienced weather hazards and extreme weather for expample droughts , thunderstorms , snow, heatwaves and strong winds
    •  The UK is the meeting point of several different types of weather from different directions so we have very varied weather. It is all to do with high pressure systems. for example artic air brings snow , hot and sunny weather from the south . the uk os between 2 cells
  • storm babet all of uk - there had been heavy rain in october so ground was already saturated some locations had already collected 2 months of rain
  • cause - typhoon near japan pushed jet stream in unusual position , storm devoloped over bay of biscay which dropped water, presistent heavy rain and strong wind
  • impacts : 1000 houses flooded , 7 dead, schools and railways closed , caused pollution to water and wildlife from things like sewage overflows
  • immediate : temporary defences like barriers and flood gates, over 40,000 houses protected , 300 warning and 300,000 messages
  • long term : govern gave support, small businesses and flood hit properties could apply for support
