Jane Eyre

Cards (16)

  • You are like a murderer... a slave driver...a Roman Emperor
Jane responds to John's behavior by comparing him to figures who embody cruelty, oppression and injustice. And by standing up to John, she shows her intolerance of injustice, even when she knows that she will be punished later. Shows that the refusal to accept injustice is one of the fundamental aspects of Jane's character. She also illustrates the way people with power act and behave unjustly towards those without power.
  • I was like nobody there
The Simile of Nothingness shows how lonely Jane felt in Gateshead and was like an outsider. The pronoun nobody portrays how Jane feels no individuality and is always misunderstood and is feeling a desire to be accepted by the Reed family. There seems like a comparison and foil to bertha mason.
  • I will never call you aunt again
Jane asserts her independence and dignity and refuses to address Mrs Reed as aunt. The modal verb 'will' signifies that Jane is determined to break free from the oppressive rule assigned her, and no longer recognises A familial bond with someone who has treated her so harshly and traumatised her. Buildings. Roman is used to show that jane has grown physically and emotionally to a self-reliant, independent young woman who is willing to stand up for herself.
