The Brain/ Limbic System

Cards (13)

  • Fill in the blanks
    A) cerebrum
    B) cerebellum
    C) brainstem
  • What is the function of a cerebellum?
Cerebellum: to coordinate muscle movements, maintain posture, and balance.
  • What is the function of a brainstem?
Brainstem: acts as a relay centre connecting the cerebrum and cerebellum to the spinal cord and performs many automatic functions.
  • What is the function of a cerebrum?
Cerebrum: divided into two halves: the right and left hemispheres, they are joined by a bundle of neuron fibres called the corpus callosum that transmits messages from one side to the other.
  • Fill in the blanks
    A) Frontal lobe
    B) Broca area
    C) Parietal lobe
    D) Wernicke area
    E) occipital lobe
    F) temporal lobe
    G) Motor strip and sensory strip
  • What is the function of a frontal lobe?
    • Personality, behaviour, emotions
    • Judgment, planning, problem solving
    • Speech: speaking and writing (Broca’s area)
    • Body movement (motor strip)
    • Intelligence, concentration, self awareness
  • What is the function of a parietal lobe?
    • Interprets language, words
    • Sense of touch, pain, temperature (sensory strip)
    • Interprets signals from vision, hearing, motor, sensory and memory
    • Spatial and visual perception
  • What is the function of a occipital lobe?
    • Interprets vision (color, light, movement)
  • What is the function of a temporal lobe?
    • Understanding language (Wernicke’s area)
    • Memory
    • Hearing (processing sounds)
    • Sequencing and organization
  • What is the Limbic system?
The Limbic system: the part of the brain involved in behavioural and emotional responses.
  • What is the function of the amygdala?
Amygdala: responsible for the response and memory of emotions, especially fear.
  • What is a thalamus?

Sensory and motor data arrives here and is then relayed to specific areas of the cortex. This means sensory input from your eyes, ears, taste, touch arrive at the thalamus and are sent to other parts of the cerebral cortex (occipital lobe, parietal lobe etc.)
  • What is a hypothalamus?
    • Role in maintaining homeostasis
    • Responsible for regulating:
    • body temperature
    • appetite
    • Thirst
    • Hormones
