  • Overconsumption of carbohydrate = Eating sugar
  • Free sugar:
    • Sugars that are added to foods
    • Naturally present in honey, syrups, fruit juices
    • Increase overall energy intake
    • Reduce intake of foods containing more nutritionally adequate calories
    • Unhealthy diet, Weight gain, Increased risk of non-communicable disease
  • Diets that are persistently high in sugar:
    • Disrupt the body’s glucose metabolism
    • Insulin resistance develop
    • Diabetes, Obesity, Dementia, Cancer
  • Adults and Children: Restrict intake < 10% total energy intake per day (~ 12.5 teaspoons of sugar for adults)
