Section 7: Boat

Cards (5)

  • Start and end of dance
Starts with LM being shaken off his platform, ends with all monks and LM in metal boat/box, with LM doing a searching action, all wooden boxes in corner
  • F+C: 2 movements and analysis

-Monks contained inside/on top of wooden boxes (island) and then metal box (boat); SLC removing the wooden boxes and forcing the monks into the metal box: him showing how he felt in section 5 + 6 when he was forced into a box by them/society?

-Confined in boat but ocean wide open space: show how SLC felt trapped and unable to move from the box society put him in despite seeing all the other options he could have?
  • JoA: 4 movements and analysis
-Monks on island crowd one monk and reject him, pushing him off island. SLC comforts him by touching shoulder, SLC then touches the sides of the wooden island, forces the other monks to jump off as the previous monk had to, showing them how the monk felt

-The monks moving away from the boxes SLC touches could also show wariness of strangers; they don't want to touch or be involved in anything outsiders do (which leads them into danger/limits options)

-LM runs from the monk who shook him off his box straight to SLC, showing he feels safe around him and accepts him

-Monks all grouped together on high level, SLC and LM on floor, LM tried to get up onto box but couldn't, rejection
  • Transformation: 2 movements and analysis
-LM goes from Buddha-like figure in section 6 back to a child when he is shaken off his platform
-Audience laughs as the young monk tries to jump up on the box but instead falls to the floor transforming stereotypes the audience have for the monks.
  • Set and analysis
Wooden boxes become an island, metal box a boat, wooden boxes move gradually to stage left
Boat shown through swaying, wooden boxes moving become graves, demonstrate the island is no longer safe
