  • The disastrous economic policies led to opposition and revolt.
  • Tambov Revolt
    • Took place from August 1920 to June 1921.
    • A 70,000 peasant army led by Alexander Antonov fought against the Red Armies requisition squads of over 100,000.
    • The Red Army used poison gas.
  • Martial law was used to suppress unrest in the cities as the bread ration was cut and workers protested against their treatment.
  • When soldiers refused to crush demonstrations, the Cheka did.
  • The Kronstadt Naval Base in March 1921 sent a manifesto to Lenin demanding better treatment of workers and the end of one-party rule.
  • The Red Army attacked the Kronstadt sailors from 5 miles across the ice, 15,000 rebels were captured and their leaders were shot.
