  • There are 5 main ethical issues:
    • deception
    • risk to ppt values,beliefs relationships , relationship or privacy
    • valid consent
    • protection
    • confidentiality
  • deception = ppts aren’t told the true aims of the study and are misled
  • Risk to ppts beliefs and relationships = attitudes are challenged and attitudes are kept secret
  • valid consent = ppts are asked to give permission to take part in the study and should know the nature of it
  • protection of ppt = protected psychologically and physically
  • confidentiality = ppts details and data remain anonymous
  • to deal with deception, you should give your ppts a debrief, right to withdraw or could obtain presumptive consent
  • to deal with valid consent, you can gain it by presumptive , prior informed and parental
  • to deal with protection from harm , you can give your ppts the right to withdraw and debrief
  • risk to values and privacy , conduct field studies in a public area and the right to with draw
  • to deal with confidentiality, keep identities anonymous
  • an ethics committee is a group of people who review research proposals and decide whether the benefits are justifiable for the risk of harm
  • members of ethics committee include experts in the field along with lay people
  • ethics committees can request researchers make changes to their study or deny approval
  • ethics committees are beneficial as they second check the research is ethical
  • the british psychological society is a representative body for psychologists and psychology in the UK
  • BPS oversees research and application practises of psychology in the UK
  • The BPS code of conduct are ethical guidelines that provide a set of moral guidelines to guide research
  • researchers have a professional duty to follow the BPS guidelines or could be expelled from the BPS and lose their job
