  • Paragraph- main unit of organization, it is to present ideas and contains topic sentence, supporting details, and concluding sentence
  • Paragraph has elements: unity, coherence, and emphasis
  • Topic Sentence- main idea of the paragraph and is found near or at the beginning
  • Types of Topic Sentence:
    • List Statements
    • Power Number Statements
    • Two Nouns and Two Commas
    • Occasion Position
    • Get their Attention
  • List Statements- tells the readers what the paragraph is all about by stating three or more ideas
  • Power Number Statements-does not tell the readers about the topic but uses number words(few,mandy,several)
  • Two Nouns and Two Commas- always start with noun, describes it then make a statements about it
  • Occasion Position- starts with occasion( dependent clause) use words like whenever, although, even though and ends with a independent clause
  • Get their Attention- tries to grab the readers attention by saying something interesting

    • Unity
    • Emphasis
