  • CO2 is transported in 3 ways:
    1. small amounts of CO2 gas are transported in the plasma
    2. some CO2 binds to proteins
    3. most CO2 is transported as bicarbonate
  • CO2 is more soluble in the body fluids than O2
  • CO2 diffuses out of the blood
  • deoxygenated blood can carry more CO2 than oxygenated blood (Haldane effect)
  • more CO2 can bind to the protein of hemoglobin to form carbaminohemoglobin (haldane effect)
