Harlow: monkey study

Cards (3)

  • What did Harlow do in his study?
He used 16 baby monkeys to study attachment behaviour.
  • What was the aim of Harlow's study?
Investigate the mechanisms of attachment, focusing on the importance of emotional comfort over nourishment.
  • How did he test what was more important for the monkeys?
He scared them with a loud noise and observed where they would run to. They had a 'wire monkey' which provided them with food and a 'puppet monkey' which was soft and comforting. He saw that the monkeys ran to the softer monkey for comfort.
