Van Ijzendoorn and Kroonenberg

Cards (3)

  • What did Van Ijzendoorn and Kroonenberg do?
They criticised Ainsworth for being culturally biased. They completed a meta-analysis on 32 studies across 8 countries using Ainsworth's 'strange situation'.
  • What is a meta-analysis?
A summary piece of research which looks at a range of similar studies, analysing for one particular factor, in this case, attachment type.
  • What were the findings of their meta-analysis?
    1. Secure attachment was the most common in all cultures.
    2. Germany had the highest number of avoidant children (focused on raising obedient, independent children. Secure attachment=too needy).
    3. Japan had very few avoidant children but a high proportion of resistant children, almost never alone (sleep with parents, usually until age 2).
