  • What is Bowlby's maternal deprivation hypothesis?
    If an infant is unable to develop a warm, intimate, and continuous relationship with their mother then the child would have difficulties later in life.
  • When does Bowlby believe an attachment should occur?
    During the critical period.
  • What can a lack of maternal care lead to?
    Negative outcomes:
    Affectionless psychopathy
    Anaclitic depression
    Dependency anxiety
    Dwarfism
    Intellectual retardation
  • What is anaclitic depression?
    Significant sadness as a reaction to the loss of a loved one.
  • What is affectionless psychopathy?
    Loss of social conscience linked with aggression and delinquency.
  • What is dependency anxiety?
    Becoming dependent on others and become anxious that these people will leave them.
  • What is dwarfism?
    Poor physical development, stunted growth.
  • What is intellectual retardation?
    Poor cognitive development, low IQ
