  • What is the effect on childhood relationships?
Securely attached infants were more socially competent in childhood, less isolated and more popular, and more empathetic. This can be explained in terms of the IWM, because securely attached infants have higher expectations that others are friendly and trusting, which would lead to better relationships.
  • What did Smith suggest (1998)?
Securely attached infants were less involved in bullying. Avoidant = victims. Resistant = bullies.
  • What is the effect off poor parenting?
The lack of IWM means that the individuals lack reference points to subsequently form relationships with other children.
  • What did Bailey do in 2007?
Assessed 99 mothers using strange situation and interviews. Found that mothers had the same attachment type with their child as with their mother (generational cycle).
  • What is the effect on mental health?
Children with attachment disorder have no preferred attachment figure, an inability to interact and relate to others and an experience of severe neglect or frequent change of caregivers. This disorder has been recognised and classed as a distinct psychiatric condition included in the DSM.
