Scrooge

Cards (15)

  • "Solitary as an oyster"

This is at the beginning of the novel and this shows that Scrooge is a tough character. There is an simile that shows that he has chosen to isolate himself. The noun "oyster" is an object found at the bottom of the ocean and this symbolises Scrooges lonely, disliked character. However oysters contain a pearl inside which could suggest that there might be good buried deep inside of Scrooge
  • "Are there no prisons...workhouses?"

This shows that Scrooge is being selfish and greedy. He feels that no one should worry about the poor because they have workhouses and prisons for them. This quote also shows the Poor Law which is where the government would help the poor, however they had to work at the workhouses for free
  • Scrooge represents the rich
  • "I will live in the Past, Present and Future"

This shows that Scrooge has redeemed himself. He has transformed into a different person. Dickens wanted his wealthy readers to transform into different people and give to the poor like what happened to Scrooge at the very end of the novel
  • "Happy or unhappy"

Scrooge was saying that Fezziwig had the power to make his employers happy or unhappy. This shows that employers and business men have the power to change the lives of their workers as it is up to them what they are going to do with the power that they have
  • "The cold within him froze his old features"

Dickens' personifies the weather to describe Scrooge's appearance
  • "No warmth could warm, no wintry weather chill him"

This shows that Scrooge is cold-hearted. Dickens uses pathetic fallacy to represent Scrooge's nature. The weather is a metaphor for Scrooge's behaviour as he cannot be made either warmer or colder by it
  • "Your lip is trembling and what is that upon your cheek?"

This is the first time we see some other emotion from Scrooge. He is emotionally affected by the trip back to his childhood as a tear appears on his cheek
  • "I should like to be able to say a word or two to my clerk just now."
This quote shows that Scrooge is softening
  • ""Go and buy it...I will send it to Bob Cratchits"

This quote shows how generous Scrooge is. We as the reader can see that he has changed
  • He learns the generosity from Fezziwig
  • "Hard and sharp as flint"

The adjective "hard" suggests that he lacks warmth, empathy and compassion while the adjective "sharp" suggests pain, implying that Scrooge has no mercy towards others
  • "I'll raise your salary, and endeavour to assist your struggling family"

This quote shows that Scrooge has become charitable and he recognises that the poor needs help
  • "I am light as a feather, I am happy as an angel!"

"light as a feather" shows that Scrooge has cast off the chains of his earlier way of life (chains that were weighing Marley down). Feathers also connote freedom and flight. Scrooge feels free
  • "Tell me if Tiny Tim will live"

Scrooge has become more sentimental after the first visit by the ghost of Christmas past. He feels emotionally connected to Tiny Tim. He wants to help Tiny Tim and he feels sympathy for him
