  • Causes (Economic Resources):
    > Japan is suffering from the Great Depression, as Japanese industry was based on silk. Manchuria was rich in natural resources like coal and iron.
  • Events:
    > Mukden Incident- spark: On 18th September 1931, there was an explosion on the South Manchurian Railway. The Japanese army claimed that the train had been attacked by Chinese soldiers
  • The League’s response:
    > The League issued a moral condemnation of Japan over their invasion of Manchuria and ordered Japan to withdraw her troops. Japan refused.
  • The League’s response:
    > The League put together a Commission of Inquiry led by Lord Lytton (a British politician) to investigate what had happened. The Lytton Report took an entire year to report back and concluded that Japan had been in the wrong.
  • Consequences:
    > Japan ignored the Lytton Report and left the League of Nations. Japan continued to invade the rest of China and by 1938. The League had acted slowly and ineffectively. One of its key members had ignored its aims, acted with aggression and left.
